Oocyte Retrieval

Oocyte retrieval is an important step in the process of in-vitro fertilization (IVF), which is a common fertility treatment for couples who are struggling to conceive. During IVF, eggs are removed from a woman's ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a lab. The resulting embryos are then transferred into the woman's uterus in the hopes of achieving a successful pregnancy.

Oocyte retrieval is typically done under sedation or anesthesia, as it can cause some discomfort. The procedure involves using a thin needle to remove eggs from the ovaries. This needle is inserted through the vaginal wall and into the ovaries, guided by ultrasound imaging. Once the needle reaches the follicles in the ovaries, it is used to suction out the eggs.

After the eggs are retrieved, they are placed in a culture dish and examined to determine their quality. If the eggs are deemed viable, they are fertilized with sperm in a lab, a process known as insemination. In some cases, a technique called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used to inject a single sperm directly into an egg, to increase the chances of successful fertilization.

Once the embryos are formed, they are monitored for development and quality. The best embryos are selected for transfer into the woman's uterus, typically 3-5 days after fertilization. Any remaining embryos can be frozen and stored for future use.
