Unconsummated Marriage a gap between Parenthood

Consummation has long been a crucial part of marriage. Bedding rituals used to be an important part of the wedding ceremony. The families of newly-married couples would take steps to ensure that the marriage had been consummated.

Unconsummated marriage is the failure to perform successful sexual intercourse at the beginning of the marriage. Unconsummated marriage is a problem among couples who would not be able to perform natural sexual intercourse and vaginal penetration. Usually, after marriage, intercourse and sexual activity is naturally and mutually expected in both the spouses. If there is no physical relationship after 1 year so this called unconsummated marriage. Unconsummated marriage is one of the main sexual problems. It is more common in developing countries than developed countries and cultural factors are effective on intensifying this disorder. The inability to consummate the marriage makes the marriage pointless.

If a couple does not have sexual intercourse after the wedding, either spouse may file for a divorce or annulment of the marriage. If a state does not allow annulment on the grounds of lack of consummation, a spouse may be entitled to a divorce.

Sometimes this is also happens due to vaginismus. Vaginismus is involuntary contraction of muscles around the opening of the vagina in women with no abnormalities in the genital organs. The tight muscle contraction makes sexual intercourse or any sexual activity that involves penetration painful or impossible.

Treatment

There are treatments available for them such as vaginal dilatation, hymenectomy, behavioral therapy, or urological intervention. Couple can also visit psychiatrist for sex therapy which can helpful to make marriage consummated. Sex therapy is a form of counseling intended to help individuals and couples resolve sexual difficulties, such as performance anxiety or relationship problems. Clients generally meet in the therapist's office. Some choose to attend sessions alone, others bring their partner with them.
