This test measures the amount of TSH in the blood. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of your brain. It’s responsible for regulating the amount of hormones released by the thyroid. The thyroid is small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck. It’s an important gland that creates three primary hormones:
The thyroid controls numerous different body functions, including metabolism and growth, through the release of these three hormones. Thyroid will produce more hormones if your pituitary gland produces more TSH. In this way, the two glands work together to make sure the right amount of thyroid hormones is produced. When this system is disrupted, thyroid can produce either too many or too few hormones. A TSH test is done to check the cause of abnormal thyroid hormone levels.
On the basis of production of Thyroid in body this can be categorized as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid produces too few hormones, causing metabolism to slow down. The symptoms of hypothyroidism include Depression, constipation, feeling cold dry skin, weight gain, muscle weakness ,decreased sweating, slowed heart rate, elevated blood cholesterol ,pain and stiffness in joints, thinning hair, impaired memory, fertility difficulties or menstrual changes muscle stiffness, aches, and tenderness, puffy and sensitive face.
Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid produces too many hormones, causing the metabolism to speed up. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include increased appetite, anxiety, and difficulty in sleeping.
Effect of thyroid on infertility:-
Sometimes there is a link with hypothyroidism and infertility. Thyroid gland doesn’t produce important hormones due to hypothyroidism. If, thyroid gland released less hormones of thyroid which affect on ovulation (release of egg from ovary). Hypothyroidism should be under control before and simultaneously the infertility treatment.
Treatment:-
Treatment is done to reduce or normalized the value of thyroid hormone depending upon the production of hormone in body.
Hormone therapy with thyroxine is the choice of treatment in established hypothyroidism. It normalizes the menstrual cycle, PRL levels and improves the fertility rate. Therefore, with simple oral treatment for hypothyroidism, 76.6% infertile women with hypothyroidism conceived after 6 weeks to 1 year of therapy. The treatment for hypothyroidism is one daily pill before breakfast to replace the missing hormones.
Hyperthyroidism treatment can involve medications to inhibit the synthesis of thyroid hormones, radioactive iodine to destroy thyroid tissue, and surgery for overactive thyroid nodules. Treatment in both cases is generally safe during pregnancy, and close monitoring of hormone levels during pregnancy helps promote normal fetal development and reduces the risk of miscarriage.
